This extraordinarily delicate and subtle relief cannot be fully described as sculpture. It most closely resembles the grooves found on the surface of a vinyl record. As the needle passes over these grooves, sound is produced and music— the Venetian Variations for example — comes to life. Here, on the surface of a marginal building material — polyester vinyl — images of Venice reveal themselves under special lighting or at an angle. In this way, the postcard-like, coveted image is extracted from the surface, while the object itself becomes an artefact of the effort required to translate a plastic visual language. The series title employs the Italian verb incidere, rich with multiple meanings, further emphasising the paradoxical nature of these processes.
